We Are Of The Moon
The female cycle follows regular waves of creation and dissolution that mirror the lunar cycle in nature. We believe that women are of the moon—we are embodied, divine potential with an inherent creativity that moves through us in a cycle. We also believe that the way we move our bodies should happen from a place of reverence and self love.
Recognized as her fifth vital sign, a woman’s menstrual cycle is an indicator of overall health and vitality. To acknowledge this hormonal arc is to honor her divine nature and innate physical wisdom. Cultural conditioning pressures women to power through periods, but there’s a better way. When we choose to leverage our cyclical nature—instead of perpetually overriding it—we can optimize everything from the food we eat to the movement we enjoy to not only feel good, but to show up the way we want to in the world.
The female hormone cycle doesn’t have to be a burden—it can be a superpower.
Menstrual Phase
The menstrual phase embodies the energy of a new moon with a heavy gravity pulling your attention inward. Though this is an appropriate time for introspection and rest, it can also serve as a time for evaluation and strategic planning. Use the quiet days of your period to clear a path forward for the next cycle and course correct as necessary. Mirror your body’s physical shedding with a conscious letting go where appropriate. Restorative and gentle yoga practices complement the downward flow of energy and provide grounding in preparation for a new cycle.
Follicular Phase
The follicular phase is symbolic of the waxing moon—a time of increasing energy and expansion. As your body begins the cycle of growth and maturation once again, you may feel greater openness and access to creative flow. This provides a welcome entry point for new ideas, new experiences, and new ways of solving problems. Women in this phase may feel inspired in brainstorming and better able to initiate projects. Feeling stuck? Be patient if you can and wait for this phase to arrive. You may find that beginning comes with less effort in this phase.
Ovulatory Phase
The full moon is expressed through the ovulatory phase when hormones and energy levels at their highest. A magnetic period when the social centers in the female brain awaken and we are best able to articulate thoughts, dreams, and desires. Preparing for an interview or an important conversation? You might find the words flow most fluently during ovulation.
Luteal Phase
The luteal phase completes the cycle in the same way the waning moon slowly gives over to the new. As the peak energy of the first half of the cycle declines, the body enters a holding pattern and nestles into the remaining days. This phase is a time for completing projects and attention to detail. Use creative momentum from early in the cycle to move the needle and stay on track, knocking out any administrative tasks that may be outstanding. Any areas where you feel the urge to sort and organize? Now is the time.
It’s time to shift the 24-hour paradigm for menstruating women.
When I surveyed participants in the lunae beta test, the single most common thing I heard from women—working women, stay-at-home mamas, students, women doing all of the above—was a desire for more energy. Not the kind of energy that strikes once a month during ovulation. Not the kind that comes after that first taste of morning coffee. Not the kind that leaves with a crash just as quickly as it arrived. Instead, what I heard was a deep desire for a steady source of reliable energy that lets you feel good all month long.
The entry point to sustained energy levels is balance. A balance between rest and activity, consumption and elimination, time for self and time for others. For menstruating women, this balance doesn’t happen in a neatly packaged 24-hour cycle. The infradian rhythm that guides our four-phase monthly flow is running the show. It modulates our inner chemistry with delicate precision allowing our hormone and energy levels to rise and fall more like the moon and less like the sun.
So how do we find energetic balance on a daily basis with an infradian rhythm? With a variable approach to food, lifestyle, and exercise. More than just another workout platform, my mission is to meet you where you are each day of the month with movement practices that honor your creative potential and the hormonal magic happening inside your body.
